On the occasion of May Day holiday, Guangzhou launched a series of cuisine themed events entitled the "2021 Guangzhou Cuisine Carnival" from April 30th to May 9th in 22 star-rated hotels, 30 restaurants and over 100 catering enterprises.

Highlights include the Southeast Asian Cuisine & Culture Festival in Shangri-La Hotel, "Dream Back to the Millennium Flower City" the new surprise for taste bud event in LN Garden Hotel, and the "Guizhou Flavor and Cantonese Creativity" event in China Hotel.

The Southeast Asian Cuisine & Culture Festival kicked off at Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou on the evening of April 30th and will last until May 9th. Special cuisines from eight Southeast Asian countries, including Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, are being exhibited during the food festival.

At the opening ceremony, people enjoyed several performances featuring both local and Southeast Asian cultures, such as Indonesian dance, Philippine song "Anak" and a special song dedicated to Guangzhou, as well as a Guangdong lion dance.

LOH Tuck Keat, the Consul General of Singapore in Guangzhou, said this year marks the 30th anniversary of ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations. ASEAN-China relations have strengthened and deepened over the past 30 years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Singapore had extended assistance to each other by contributing necessary medical supplies and equipment and working together to keep supply chains open.

People who cannot travel abroad due to the epidemic can taste the beauty of Southeast Asia and experience the rich and diverse culture through this food festival, LOH Tuck Keat said.

Liu Yumei, Director-General of the Guangzhou Municipal Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau, pointed out that Guangzhou's cuisine culture is both inclusive, symbiotic, and self-contained. The city has been open to the outside world for more than two thousand years and has become a platform for the intersection of both Chinese and Western cultures. It has accepted and adapted to countless cuisine cultures.

In addition, Guangzhou has prepared more than 1,000 activities across the city for both locals and tourists during the holiday. "All are welcome to Guangzhou to enjoy a happy and peaceful May Day holiday," Liu Yumei said.
