On the occasion of the 53rd Earth Day, Guangzhou Metro released the Climate Action Plan on Green and Low-carbon Rail Transit, which is the first action plan in rail transportation to tackle climate change, saying it will reach emission peaks before 2030.
The Plan gives a first comprehensive review of opportunities and challenges, as well as laying out the core principles, ways to reach emission peak targets and achieve carbon neutrality with relevant experience in the green and low-carbon development and transformation of rail transit.
According to the Plan, Guangzhou Metro has established a standard for environmental-friendly rail transit projects, which is applicable in stations, fields and lines.
In addition, a series of nature-friendly technologies have been used in multiple subway stations – including Tianhe Park station, Xintang station, and Baijiang station – and new subway lines, like the north extension of Line 18 (also known as “Guangzhou East to Huadu Tiangui intercity”) and the north extension of Line 22 (also called “Fangcun to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport intercity”) to save energy and reduce carbon emission. The Plan indicates that there will be more to come.
