The two unmanned harvesters and the unmanned grain truck traveled along the planned migration path from the hangar parking lot to the harvest field. After the harvester enters the field, it automatically harvests grain until the granary is full. It takes its position at the grain unloading point and sends a signal to the grain truck, which drives to this position accurately to pick up grain.
"This is such a breakthrough for two unmanned harvesters and an unmanned grain truck jointly operating for the first time, requiring extreme precision for unmanned machines." Luo Xiwen introduced. In the future, he sees a trend of more unmanned harvesters cooperating and operating with one unmanned grain trunk with greater production efficiency.
In 2020, Luo's team built the world's first self-sufficient farm with intelligent machines based on BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. Currently, 13 provinces have constructed 26 self-sufficient farms, cultivating rice, wheat, corn, peanuts, and other crops, Guangdong has 8 such farms.
In 3 years, Luo’s team make every process automatic step by step, plowing, planting, monitoring, and harvesting grain. Unmanned machines are capable of transporting grains between fields and warehouses, with automatic obstacle avoidance parking functions, 24-7 operating monitors, and intelligent decisions.
According to Luo Xiwen, an unmanned harvester can harvest 6 acres (about 2.43 square kilometers) of land in one hour, which is more than 100 times more efficient than manual operation.
"The construction of unmanned farm based on the actual situation to formulate corresponding specific production plans is our next focus to study the problem." Luo said, the team will deepen research on unmanned systems that can adapt to different conditions so that unmanned farms can be applied on a broader scale.
