Guangdong will lower the public health emergency response from level Ⅱ to level Ⅲ starting from May 9th. The decision was made based on relevant laws and the recent condition of epidemic control in the province.

Guangdong was the very first province to activate the top-level public health emergency response on January 23rd, and imposed strict measures to prevent the coronavirus from spreading within the province or beyond. As the number of new confirmed cases per day had declined continuously, Guangdong adjusted the emergency response to level Ⅱ on February 24th.

Guangzhou reported no new confirmed cases and asymptomatic patients on May 7th. As of May 7th, the province has reported a total number of 1,589 COVID-19 cases, only 6 of whom are still under treatment in hospital. The recovery rate exceeds 99 percent.

Although the emergency level is lower, it does not mean Guangdong will ease its epidemic control measures. The province still faces risks as more Chinese people are coming back from overseas and more people have been back to work.

The expert said people should still wear a mask when visiting crowded areas such as the metro, hospitals and schools. If you develop any respiratory symptoms such as fever and cough, you should immediately report the condition via Suikang and go the the nearest fever clinic.
