Companies make all the right connections

Dozens of businesses in delegation sign more than 170 letters of intent at third CIIE

A trade delegation from Beijing established business connections and reached cooperation agreements with numerous international companies at the third China International Import Expo in Shanghai earlier this month.


The 7,661-strong delegation included representatives from 2,361 Beijing-based companies and organizations. Of them, 67 companies signed 173 letters of intent for cooperation with businesses from 26 countries and regions.


At the third CIIE, the Beijing-based companies introduced high-end products, advanced technologies and high-quality services in the hope of building the capital into an international hub for consumption and meeting people's yearning for a better life, a local official said.


Home appliance chain Gome signed purchase orders worth $960 million with South Korean multinational conglomerate Samsung Group, German industrial supplier Bosch and Mitsubishi Electric of Japan.


Beijing CP Commercial Trading purchased commodities worth some $80 million to meet the diversified needs of the capital's consumer market.


E-commerce companies inked agreements with key partners. Beijing Huimai Network Technology signed $200 million contracts with three exhibitors, and Beijing Wajiu Electronic Commerce signed wine purchase contracts with several overseas wineries, amounting to $8 million.


To improve the quality of healthcare services and support medical education in Beijing, 30 municipal and district hospitals signed $120 million contracts with related enterprises.


German drug manufacturer Bayer signed a drug procurement contract worth more than $100 million and Sinopharm, a State-owned pharmaceutical company, showed its intent to purchase services worth $30 million.


In the fields of high-end manufacturing, artificial intelligence and new energy which play crucial roles in the transformation and upgrading of the capital's economic structure, Beijing-based companies such as Beijing Sifang Automation and Hollysys signed procurement and cooperation agreements with exhibitors from countries including the United States, Japan and Germany.


Beijing Iron Ore Trading Center and Brazilian mining company Vale signed a memorandum of understanding during the CIIE. Vale will launch an iron ore spot trading platform on Chinese instant-messaging app WeChat with Corex in early 2021 to aid yuan-denominated transactions.


In addition, Beijing's business delegation hosted 31 promotion events, held talks with 404 key enterprises, and distributed more than 1,500 copies of publicity materials.


Twenty-two time-honored brands from Beijing also presented their traditional craftsmanship at the expo.


Top gold dealer in Beijing-Beijing Cai Bai-was one of them. Shi Lei, its deputy general manager, said it was the first time the company had taken part in the expo as an exhibitor.


"The jewelry we have brought to the expo this time draw inspirations from Chinese fables and 3D technology is used to make it lifelike," Shi said. He added that the company hoped its creative and cultural products can gain in popularity among consumers via the expo.


During the expo, the city launched promotional events, focusing on the construction of the Integrated National Demonstration Zone for Opening Up the Service Sector and the China (Beijing) Pilot Free Trade Zone; the opening-up of the financial sector; the promotion of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games; and the promotion of the China International Fair for Trade in Services.


Government officials from seven of Beijing's 16 districts, as well as the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, introduced their latest policies and initiatives for opening-up, innovation and entrepreneurship, showcasing enormous opportunities in the capital's service industry and trade in services.
